I come from a big family (9 kids in all, I'm the youngest) and being unmarried and without kids I sometimes wonder what my role in the family is (besides being the black sheep or token single person at family gatherings, haha) But then I realized, what am I thinking? I play a very important role in the family structure, because I am an aunt!!
Yes, I'm the one who gets to spoil my nieces and nephews rotten when I'm in town, take them to the park, play games with them, make paper dolls and craft projects, or babysit them until they get cranky then send them back to their parents, haha, it's not a bad gig.
Admittedly, I am not a perfect aunt and should do more. I don't send many birthday cards or call. I think when my life is more settled (i.e. I am married, or just live a less chaotic lifestyle) I'll probably be better at sending out cards, gifts, etcetera... I just hope my nieces and nephews know I still care, and adore each and everyone one of them (all 23 of them, including one on the way, congrats Zina!!).
Now, speaking of things that warm your heart, recently my sister Kim sent me over some drawings she scanned that my niece and nephew had done. Lately my 5-year old niece Irissa (whom we call Rissa, or Stinky Toes Lolita, its a long story, lol) has been drawing a lot of pictures, and she's getting pretty good at it, too. She insisted on drawing a portraiture of yours truly. So without further ado, here's Rissa's masterpiece...
I really love the detail. Not bad for a 5-year old. The orange shirt is super eye-catching isn't it? My niece knows her Aunt Jessie well, I love red lipstick and accessories, and check out those hot purple earrings! Orange is also my favorite color, which she didn't know, so intuitive drawing choice, lol. I also loved that she wrote my name and hers at the top, in that cute wobbly kid handwriting of hers. Here are some other Irissa renderings included in the bunch.
As you can tell she is excited for Halloween (the orange thing is a pumpkin) and loves writing her name and numbers on everything. And here's another one...
What's more cute and cuddly than an adorable bear with a smiley face? Irissa also loves putting dots on everything so she can connect them later, too cute! Also looks like she's getting fancy with her name, too, the 'A' looks like rather scribbly and sophisticated, lol.Her older brother Isaiah (Zaya as we call him) also loves to draw. Here's one of his recent drawings...
Isaiah is the typical 9-year old, obsessed with robots and video games. This particular drawing reminds me of a mix between a Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle and a robot. Isaiah is also very precocious and creative, for my mom's recent 63rd birthday he made her a card that read "Congratulations Grandma, 63 is the new 25!!" Wish I had a picture of it, I'll see what I can do.Anyway, as you can see I'm a proud aunt :)

Hey, you can join me in the Auntie Matchmaking Brigade! Your "children" are adorable!
Looks like my niece Rissa is the same age as your nephew Aiden. She's a wild one though, I warn ya. But Aiden can probably handle it, lol. Plus they're both blondies, how cute would they look together? LOL! They practically look like siblings though.
What do ya think? Should we betroth them now? LOL!
love the artwork!
maybe that pumpkin pic is some sort of "lost" message. (i don't watch the show, but i think there is something in the plot line about a strand of numbers....)
Rychelle,
Hadn't thought of that before, the numbers could very well secret codes...or maybe its like the TV show "Numbers" and my niece is a future math genius, lol!
*gasp* Maybe Rissa knows the secrets of LOST!! Cool! Does she talk...in deep length and detail...yet? LOL! I loved the pumpkin, I saw real potential there! And you have 23.5 neices/nephews?!! My on married sibling better get a move on...it's been like 7 years already!!GEEZZZZ
I love kiddie artwork! My nieces and nephews are ALL budding genius painters - I'm so proud!
So I clicked on your CD pic and it took me to your MySpace page and I love your music! Where can I get your CD? You rock!!
Thanks for coming by my blog!
you look like a great aunt, love the kids pictures!!! and not to sound all weird, but you are very pretty.
BTW, you have a gorgeous voice!!
Irissa has been known to exhibit paranormal abilities but to which extent we are unsure of as of now. We are currently working on her crystal ball skills. LOL As for the betrothal, sounds good. I say let us return to the "old days of arranged marriage". Couples seemed happier then. LOL
UKYankinOz, Thank you SOO much for checking out my music. I am truly touched, and so glad you enjoyed it! It always means the world when people respond to my music. At the moment am working on a CD, and then will sell it on I-tunes, so I will let ya know!
Wendyburd: Tell your sib to have kids asap, its so fun being an aunty! And thank you for the compliment on my music, too! Gosh you gals are so sweet!
Wendy: Welcome to my blog, hope ya come back again! And thank you for the sweet compliment. But you should see me on Saturday morning with no makeup, haha. Lets just say I require a lot to make me look semi-decent, haha.
And Kim, yes Rissa is a smart kiddo, getting even smarter by the day! I miss that rascal. As for betrothal, I would have to be part of the picking out part since I am aunt after all. But you are her mom so you get some say, too, haha!
You haven't blogged in forever! Although, I realize it's been about a week, even though your post is dated September.
As you've always taught me Jess, "Let thuh paint be thuh intuhpretah of what yoah feelin." I believe Rissa was attempting to communicate a feeling that you should actually wear a large hollowed-out pumpkin sometime.
